iPod Touch 3.0 Software Upgrade – The Great iPhone Alternative

If you’ve been following the site, you may notice that I’ve posted about iPhone Apps on several occasions. I’ve been asked “how can you post about iPhone Apps when you don’t have an iPhone?” I believe I have the best of both worlds with a Blackberry Storm and an iPod Touch, which is my favorite toy. With the Storm, I get the reliable Verizon service and the great 3G network. The iPod Touch utilizes Wifi, but serves as my living room internet connection and mp3/movie player on the go. I also have quite a bit of fun with the Apps.

I’m sure you’ve heard about the new iPhone 3.0 and it’s added features, but if you’re like me and don’t want to switch to AT&T, the iPhone Touch may be a nice alternative. You get access to all the Apps and other great things the iPhone offers, minus the telephone service.

Recently, Apple made the 3.0 iPod Touch Software Upgrade Available. It’s a one time fee of $10, but really improves upon the iPod Touch. Below is a summary of added features you’ll get with the upgrade.

Download movies, TV shows, music videos, and audiobooks over Wi-Fi from the iTunes Store on iPod touch.
Listen to music wirelessly with the new Bluetooth compatibilityShake your iPod Touch to shuffle the songs.
New Peer-to-Peer gaming to play against others
Large Landscape keyboard in Mail, Notes and Safari.
Spotlight Search lets you search your entire iPod, including your contacts, mail, music, calendar, etc.
Copy and Paste. Finally, you can copy images, text or links and paste them in other applications.
Faster Safari performance
Sync your Notes with your Mac or PC

If you already have the iPod Touch, I highly recommend the 3.0 Ugrade if you have an extra $10 to spend. My favorite new feature is the added ability to rent or purchase movies and tv shows through my Wifi device. I also love the copy and paste feature, which is long overdue. Great news for Blackberry Users! Blackberry Apps World was just launched and it looks pretty awesome! They’ve loaded the Apps Center with over 350 Apps to start and I’m sure we’ll see this number continue to increase.

Here’s how it works. Once you download Blackberry App World to your Blackberry, you’ll find several Apps, both free and for purchase. To purchase an App, you must first have a PayPal account established.

You can search through the Apps by a nice side scrolling interface, by category, top downloads, search or “myworld.” Each App displays a short description, Free or the specific price and a 1-5 star rating. Below, you’ll find the various categories as well as how many Apps are in each.

Today has turned into Blackberry App day for me. I’ve been searching the various corners of the net to find the best Blackberry Apps. Unlike the iPhone, Blackberry users are left utilizing 3rd party Apps to better customize and add functional Apps to their device. Below, you’ll find 20 Cool Blackberry Apps and sites to search and find more.

Music & Ringtones

Slacker Radio gives you the ability to listen to over 100 free music genres. Store music directly on your device so you can play even when you have no connection. Slacker Radio provides detailed information for each album and artist. If Slacker Radio isn’t for you, you could always give Flycast a listen. Flycast gives you over 1000 radio channels for news, sports, weather, talk and traffic. Search radio stations by city or genre and save your favorites.

Need a new ringtone for your Blackberry? With Melopolis, you’ll be able to create free ringtones using their online music studio. Once you create the ringtones, you can quickly and easily transfer them to your Blackberry.

Utilities

Ever bump a button while talking on your Blackberry? CellAvant prevents those unecessary annoyances by locking your screen after you initiate a call. Once the screen is locked, you can simply slide the arrow to the right to unlock (similar to iPhone slide-to-unlock feature). If you’ve ever wanted to leave a voice mail, but avoid small-talk, Slydial lets you leave a voice mail without your contact even hearing a ring.

If you want to save the trouble from typing reminders or messages for yourself, reQall gives you the ability to use their voice to text recorder.

If you like the iPod Touch/iPhone Slide to Unlock function, SlidetoUnlock gives you the same identical looking function for your blackberry. BBScreenShooter lets you get screen-shots of your Blackberry screen. It’s great for sharing pictures of apps, blogging, etc.

If you would like a mobile-friendly site, enter the url in Google’s GWT tool and decide whether you want to include pictures or not.

Productivity
Google Calendar can be quite handy. With Google Sync, you can sync your Google Calendar directly with your Blackberry Calendar. I use it all the time! If you use GMail, you’ll probably want to try the GMail App. Get more mobile apps with Google Mobile. Just type in your phone number & they’ll send you the link to download from your Blackberry.

Media/Movies/Entertainment
Everyone loves YouTube. With this App, you can search for, save and watch any YouTube Video directly on your Blackberry. If you don’t want to limit yourself to YouTube clips, you may want to try Vuclip. The Vuclip App lets you search for and watch any video on the net from sites such as MetaCafe, DailyMotion and hundreds more.

Do you have any DVDs you’d like to watch on your Blackberry? DVDtoGo gives you the ability to convert movies and videos for use on your Blackberry.

For pure news, entertainment and sports, Viigo lets you collect RSS feeds to keep up with all the latest happenings. It’s full y customizable as you choose the feeds you want to reed and keep up with.

Social Networking
If you use Facebook, be sure to get the Facebook App. You can update your status, upload photos/videos and keep up with all your friends using this App. If your a Twitter fan, TwitterBerry is the best Twitter App I’ve found for the Blackberry. I prefer to use this App on my Blackberry, rather than from my PC.

I recently purchased a Blackberry Storm, despite some of the mixed reviews I read. I have to say that I love it, but was a little dissapointed with the lack of available Apps. Since purchasing the Storm, I have been searching for related sites, tools, apps, tips, themes and anything else I can get my hand on to have more options to better personalize the device to my liking.
