Last January, I presented the top 10 free movie sites based on my experience using the sites. Since that time, many sites have changed. Some have been on the decline with broken links, ads and other annoyances or peformance issues while others have improved and new sites emerging. It’s important to note that all the movie sites utilize some advertising model, whether it’s embedded into the content, popup in the background, etc. I highly recommend using a popup blocker when using any of these sites.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Before going over the Top 10 Free Movies Sites in 2010, I wanted to touch on four honorable mentions. These sites didn’t make the list due to being a bit more genre or niche specific. Atomic Age Cinema is an outstanding site that gives you all the classic movies and Asian-Horror-Movies made the Top 10 Free Movies sites last year and features excellent content. Additional sites I know you’ll love include Indie Movies Online and Watch Kung Fu.
2010 TOP 10 FREE MOVIE SITES
The Top 10 were chosen based on a series of criteria. The list is weighted by user votes in polls I’ve published, number of clicks to watch, annoyances, video quality, size of library and overall experience. I also tend to prefer sites that stream the content on their own video player opposed to redirecting to other external sources.
10. Sofa Vision (watch.sofavision.tv) This site doesn’t have the biggest selection with less than 100 movies, but each movie streams in the on-page large high quality DIVX player.Many newer movies are featured on this site and it’s definitely a site to watch in 2010.

9. Movie2K (movie2k.com) – Online database of over 56,000 movies to watch. Each movie listed in the directory provides the IMDB rating, available links & link quality rating. The links identify which host it leads to, along with an indication for whether the link is working well (smiley face) or broken (frowning face).

8. DIVXFest (divxfest.com) DIVXFest gives you over 1000 movies, sorted A to Z. Click on a movie and get the movie poster, information and the on screen video player.

7. DIVXZoo (divxzoo.com) DIVXZoo provides over 500 movies to stream in high quality DIVX. Click the movie, punch in a verification code and click stream.

6. Hulu (hulu.com) – Hulu features an extensive list of commercial-supported streaming video. It’s the most known and prominent site listed. The interface is very attractive, smooth and simple to use. All movies are high quality with much of the content now being in high definition. If Hulu had a bigger database of movies, it would be the easy choice as number 1. While every movie site has advertisements, you’ll start with a short commercial before you watch and be required to watch 5 or more additional commercials throughout your movie.

5. Albavid (albavid.com) Watch over 500 free movies, categorized by genre. Click the movie, click watch now and start streaming through a variety of host sites. The content plays directly on Albavid’s page.

4. Ninja Video (ninjavideo.net) – Ninja Video streams all the movies currently at the theater and has about 100 or so others in its database. The links are frequently updated and videos stream directly on the site within the Ninja Video Player. Other categories include tv shows, documentaries and cartoons.The site is great, but a popup blocker is the first thing you’ll want to use with this site.

3. Watch-Movies (movies-links.tv) – Watch Movies provides links to more than 18,000 movies, utilizing hosts such as DIVX sites, Mega Video, SuperNova, Veoh and more. The community of 200,000+ users are key to the success to this site. Within each movie is a series of links with thumbs up or thumbs down along with the percentage. This helps determine which link to watch. Videos are streamed through the hosting site’s video player.

2. DIVX Republic (divxrepublic.blogspot.com) Over 2800 movies to watch free online. Just click the movie and hit play. The library of movies, streaming video player and quality of videos helped DIVX Republic make the jump to number 2. It’s strictly a movie site that sorts movies by category. Click a movie and access a page containing movie info and the streaming player. Many movies offer multiple versions that all stream directly on the site. This is a new favorite site of mine and a worthy choice for number 2.

1. TV Shack (tvshack.net) – TV Shack was originally launched in 2007 and currently features over 6400 movies streamed directly on the site or via external link. Each movie is alphabetized and other categories include television, Anime, music and documentaries. All videos (unless specified as external) stream directly within the attractive TVShack video player. The site is very visually appealing, smooth, has a large database of movies and is a little more ad-heavy than last year but still outperforms most others. You’ll find everything from movies from the 30’s to those in the theater today.
