Supporting unsigned or unknown bands and watching them emerge is not only very fun, but rewarding. I’ve heard countless songs from some amazing unsigned artists, such as one of my new favorites Simone, that easily outshines most mainstream “radio hits.” Here’s a look at 5 creative sites that expose you to the world of unsigned bands, while giving you the ability to support and promote each.

GarageBand - User-based site that gives you the ability to download free MP3s from these new artists, provide a review (users can win prizes by reviewing) and watch the top rated songs climb the charts. In 2004, GarageBand had then unsigned artist “10 Years” post their song Wasteland, which hit #1 on the GarageBand charts. They were signed shortly after by Universal and hit #1 with Wasteland on the 2006 Billboard Charts. Top artists are promoted by 1,000 radio partners. Checkout DragonFly by Universal Town Pass and Apart by Freddy Litwiniuk.

Unsigned – Very cool site that specializes in discovering unsigned bands. Per their mission statement, “Unsigned.com is dedicated to providing independent Artists from solo, trio to bands, the best outlet possible to be heard globally on the Internet. Just as important is our goal to provide you, the Artists, with a new revenue and distribution model for your music.” I’m currently digging A Farewell Fire.

Purevolume - This site discovers and promotes new and emerging artists. With this site, the artist has the option to make their music available for free download. Purevolume is also a social networking site that enables users to create a profile and interact with the bands.

SellABand – This unique site provides users the ability to help fund their favorite unsigned artists. The artist retains the complete ownership of the work, but can choose the incentives they will offer to fans who have funded them. Artists can enter into deals with any label, management company or publisher with no advances or pay back.

Slicethepie – Another unique site which helps artists raise money, helps fans make money via reviews and gives investors the opportunity finance some of the best artists. Artists upload their tracks, users get paid to review them, then artists with the best rated tracks goes on the site’s showcase where investors or anyone can invest in the band. Take a look at the current Showcase Frontrunners, which also includes their funded percentage.

Do yo have any favorite bands you’d like to mention? Did I miss any other top sites that specialize in Unsigned Artists? Feel free to give your favorite band a shout out and share their band link.
