I have found that my wife and I rarely go see a movie without first checking the ratings. There are a few sites in particular I commonly use. These sites have saved me on quite a few occasions, such as with the infamous Disaster Movie. Here are my favorites;

1. Rotten Tomatoes – This is the primary site we use to identify the ratings of movies we rent or go to the theater to see.
To receive a “fresh rating” the user or critic has to give it atleast a 60% or 6/10 rating. Anything under that is considered rotten. For example, critics gave Pineapple Express a 68% rating (68% of critics gave it 6/10 rating or better). Their average score was 6.3/10.

Users (labeled as RT Community) on the other hand gave it an 85% rating. Their average score was 7.6 out of 10 for Pineapple Express.

2. Metacritic – This site is basically the same concept as Rotten Tomatoes. It has an equal distribution of ratings for movies, TV, music, and games. It’s also a very reliable site, from my experience. It provides critic ratings (scale of 1 to 100) and user ratings (scale of 1 to 10).

3. Blippr (beta) - Another pretty cool site. You can rate or review ratings for books, movies, games, music, etc. It has the quickest and easiest registration and ratings are just as simple. You rate them on a “love it, like it, whatever, or dislike it” scale. They also don’t want long reviews. There is a maximum of 160 characters you can input for each review. I guess you could call Blippr the lazy man’s rating site.

Also, don’t forget. If you want to rate or find ratings for your neighbors, check out this interesting site, which we covered yesterday.

    I also never go to a movie without first consulting RottenTomatoes. It’s been a mainstay for me since 2000.

    Unlike you, though, I did go to “Disaster Movie”, even after perusing the abysmal reviews. I was thinking it was from the guys who made “Superhero Movie” which came out earlier this year and which I enjoyed. Turned out it was another crew who put out this turd.

    Thanks for the heads-up on the other two movie sites.

    Hi Thomas,

    I loved the old Naked Gun and Scary Movie flicks back in the day, but Disaster Movie may have closed the door on any potential spoofs.

    From Rotten Tomatoes;
    Consensus: Returning to their seemingly bottomless well of flatulence humor, racial stereotypes, and stale pop culture gags, Friedberg and Seltzer have produced what is arguably their worst Movie yet.

    Ratings;
    Critics = 00% on the tomatometer
    RT Users = 10% on the tomatometer

    With these ratings, I doubt I’ll ever get the courage to watch.

    Thanks for dropping in.
    Brian
